Google will pay you $1 million if you can...

Google is putting up $1 million for anyone who can crack open its web browser and become a security threat, reports Forbes.

Chrome has entered an international hacking contest called Pwn2Own for the past three years and left untouched, while other brand name browsers like Safari, Internet Explorer, and Firefox fall victim to hacker attacks.

Why the huge cash prize? Google explains in a blog post that it’s asking for a detailed report of how the hacker was able to exploit the browser, which is not an official condition of the contest.

That information will go into making future releases of Chrome even safer.

‘Not only can we fix the bugs, but by studying the vulnerability and exploit techniques we can enhance our mitigations, automated testing, and sandboxing’, write Chrome security engineers Chris Evans and Justin Schuh.

It all goes down next week as part of the CanSecWest security conference in Vancouver.

Nokia show 41MP superphone!

Nokia smartphone a 41-megapixel was among the new technology on show during the opening day of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The 808 Pureview offers enhanced low-light performance as well as sophisticated image compression designed to help users share pictures.

Nokia hopes to regain ground lost to Google and Apple in the mobile market. However, some have criticised Nokia`s decision to use its own operating system, Symbian, on the device.
Nokia`s other smartphones typically run on Microsoft`s Windows Phone software.

Symbian, which first appeared on Nokia phones in the 90s, is widely regarded as inferior to the app and social media-driven Windows Phone system.

"The Pureview 808`s Symbian Belle operating system might detract from its appeal to a broader market, where it deserves recognition," said Tony Cripps, a principal analyst with Ovum.

"It`s a pity that Nokia was unable to combine the photographic prowess of the PureView 808 with the style of the Lumia 900.

"People will inevitably focus on the 41 megapixel sensor," said Jo Harlow, executive vice-president of Nokia smart devices.

"Such a device may well have been the first smartphone to truly deserve the title of `superphone`." Nokia claims the 808 sets a "new industry standard" in mobile imaging devices.

Samsung ahead of Nokia

As per a study by NM Incite, Samsung mobile is on top of consumers` mind on various social media, including Facebook, Twitter and other on line sites, ahead of other brands as they discussed about the Android platform.

Interestingly, the Apple Inc`s iPhone came at 61st position in the study, which stated: "As per parameters, one key criteria was fans and followers on official social media pages, and it was observed that the iPhone did not have an official page to accurately measure this number."

Samsung mobile and Ford have emerged to be more popular than illustrious rivals like Nokia and Maruti Suzuki, respectively, on social media platforms in India, according to findings of NM Incite, a Nielsen-McKinsey company.

Apple’s legal woes in China offer hope to rivals

Apple Inc’s legal row over its iPad trademark in China creates a window of opportunity for rivals such as Lenovo Group Ltd and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd as they try to chip away at the US firm’s dominance of the potentially vast Chinese tablet market.

Apple, the world’s most valuable technology company, is fighting lawsuits brought by debt-laden Chinese electronics maker Proview Technology (Shenzhen), causing retailers and resellers in more than 10 Chinese cities to take iPads off their shelves, according to media reports.

Apple’s iPad enjoys a huge lead over rival tablet PCs in China with a 76 percent share. Lenovo and Samsung trail a distant second and third with about 7 percent and 3 percent respectively, data from research firm IDC showed.

‘Apple’s loss could be Lenovo and Samsung`s gains’, said Jonathan Ng, an analyst with CIMB in Singapore.

Samsung likely has most to gain, because its Galaxy tablet competes in the same price segment as the iPad.

‘Samsung will probably benefit more from Apple’s ongoing lawsuit because both of them are after the same higher-end consumers given their price points’, said Dickie Chang, an analyst from IDC in Hong Kong.

‘The impact on Lenovo may be less because Lepads are lower priced and are aimed more at entry-level users’.

A basic iPad 2 typically costs 3,688 yuan or $585, roughly the same price as 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab, while some models of Lenovo’s Lepad were selling at roughly half that price on online retail sites.

IDC said in the third quarter Apple sold about 1.3 million iPads in China, while Lenovo, the world’s second largest PC maker, sold around 120,000 Lepads in its home market and South Korea’s Samsung sold 58,000 Galaxy Tabs.

The Lepad and Galaxy Tab both run on Google Inc’s Android operating system.

Google’s new privacy policy from Mar 1

In a move aimed at creating a simpler and more intuitive user experience, Google has announced changes to its privacy policy that will take effect on March 1.

The reaction to the change has been far from positive.

The subtext of the new policy is that users cannot opt out of the changes unless they close their Google accounts.

‘Currently it is a flat policy’, Hari Iyer, an IT professional who deals with information security in Dubai, told Gulf News.

The new policy unifies 60 privacy policies, and applies to all Google services.

‘With a single log in, Google will have details of what applications I access at any given time and place including details of my posts either on the social sharing service Google+ or content of my Gmail’, Iyer said.

Google product users have been alerted about the change through emails and search alerts, eliciting several critical comments.

A lecturer on Human Rights in Colombia, Dayro Reyes Acosta (@djreyesa), tweeted: ‘Let’s put attention to this new tech change. Our data future is on risk Google seeks to clarify new privacy policy’.

Blogger Sryokan (@sryokan) from Portland tweeted: ‘#Google changes it privacy policy on March 1st 2012. Hopefully it isn`t an Opt-Out policy change like Facebook’.

The new policy has even worried privacy advocates.

One US report stated that a leading lawmaker on privacy issues said he would ask for a probe into whether recently announced changes in how Google handles consumer data violated an agreement it made with the US Federal Trade Commission.

In Dubai, Anthony Stilgoe, IT manager in an educational institute, said that people are upset because the information a user shares through one service is no longer respective to that service.

‘Many aren’t happy about information being shared across Google services’.

The plus side he explained was that Google will better understand a user’s preferences.

‘Google can suggest tailor search results based on a user’s separate activity on video-sharing website YouTube or email service Gmail.

MENA Scenario
Saudi Arabia has the largest number of search queries per day followed by Egypt, Morocco, Algeria and the UAE, who together represent 70 per cent of all searches in the Mid East and North Africa (MENA) region.

Since local map domains were launched in the Mena region in 2011, there has been 50 per cent growth in usage. Google Maps usage grew at a phenomenal rate of 180 per cent in Egypt.

Google Chrome is the leading browser in Tunisia, Libya, and Jordan and the second most popular browser in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, UAE, Algeria and Morocco.

Facebook can fire Zuckerberg

Facebook can terminate services of its chief Mark Zuckerberg at any time for any reason, or even without a reason, but the social networking giant’s founder and CEO also enjoys similar exit rights.

As per Facebook’s employment agreement with Zuckerberg, his tenure at the social networking giant would be on an ‘at will’ basis, meaning his job can be terminated ‘at any time for any reason or no reason’, either by him or by the company.

The company has disclosed Zuckerberg’s employment agreement, revised late last month, as part of an amended registration document for its upcoming IPO (Initial Public Offer) filed with the US market regulator Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The global leader in social networking space is planning for a USD five billion dollar IPO, which could push Zuckerberg and a few others into the league of billionaires, based on the valuation of their shareholding in the company.

While the job duties, title, compensation and benefits, as well as the company’s personnel policies and procedures, might change from time to time, the ‘at will’ nature of Zuckerberg’s employment can be changed only after a written agreement approved by the Facebook board.

The employment agreement of Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) Sheryl Sandberg also has an ‘at-will’ clause.

Sandberg’s agreement also provides for reimbursement of her business expenses by Facebook, although that of Zuckerberg has no such clause.

One of the clauses also bars Zuckerberg from creating a rival to Facebook.

Galaxy Tab 2 launched with Android 4.0 on board

While Samsung may not be holding a media event of their own come MWC 2012, it looks like we might have gotten a look at an upcoming tablet that Samsung could be unveiling come MWC 2012.

The tablet has been dubbed the Galaxy Tab 2, rather appropriate given that it is the successor to the original 7” Galaxy Tab Android tablet.

Much like its predecessor, the Galaxy Tab 2 will sport a 7” display, a 1GHz dual-core processor under the hood, 1GB of RAM, a 3MP rear-facing camera, a VGA front-facing camera, comes in storage sizes of 16GB or 32GB, sports a whopping 4,000mAh battery and will come with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on board with Samsung’s very own TouchWiz UI on top of it.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is expected to see a launch next month in Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark among other markets.

Unfortunately at this point in time, pricing and availability of the tablet for the US market remains unknown, perhaps more will be revealed at MWC, so check back with us then!

Microsoft India hacked

Microsoft India’s retail website was down on Monday after being hacked, with a purportedly Chinese group called Evil Shadow Team posting screenshots the hackers said were customers’ obscured usernames and passwords found unencrypted on the site.

‘Microsoft is investigating a limited compromise of the company’s online store in India’, a Microsoft spokeswoman said in an emailed statement.

‘The store customers have already been sent guidance on the issue and suggested immediate actions. We are diligently working to remedy the issue and keep our customers protected’, she said.

The Microsoft Store India (www.microsoftstore.co.in) website showed an error message promising to restore access as quickly as possible.

The hackers obscured the full usernames and passwords in the screen shots posted on a blog run by Evil Shadow Team member 7z1 (ps.s.blog.163.com). Writing in Mandarin, 7z1 describes himself as a ‘patriotic hacker’.

The hacker, 7z1, told Reuters the data had been found unencrypted on the website.
The Indian edition of Microsoft Store is operated by Indian company Quasar Media.

A spokesman said the company was investigating.

‘I am not sure when the site will be up again or what happened’, spokesman Rahul Roy said.

Google gets forex violation notice

The Indian Enforcement Directorate has issued a foreign exchange violation notice to internet giant Google for alleged irregularities in transfer of funds to its foreign entities.

The Directorate has asked the Indian arm of the company to explain to it all the permissions the company has obtained from RBI in this regard and its source of income in the country along with I-T returns filed earlier.

"We have an obligation to our shareholders to set up a tax efficient structure and our present structure is compliant with the tax rules in all the countries where we operate. We make a very substantial contribution to local and national taxation and provide employment for close to 2,000 people in India," a Google spokesperson said when contacted for comments over the latest ED action.

The ED, according to sources, is investigating if the internet search giant violated the norms laid down by the RBI with regard to transfer of funds abroad, including in Ireland and also receiving similar investments from foreign shores.

The agency has obtained relevant data in this regard from the RBI and would take up any possible penal action under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) after going through the documents.

Google India, along with other social networking websites, is embroiled in a raging controversy over monitoring the content on Internet and of those websites depending on user generated contents, which arose after Union Telecommunications Minister Kapil Sibal had asked the social networking websites to "screen" the contents. The company also filed a compliance report in this regard in a Delhi court recently.

Google creates Terminator-style heads-up display glasses

The specs provide real-time information from services such as Google Maps via an Android operation system, it is understood.

They would let wearers see the world in a similar way to the cyborg assassin played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the blockbuster Terminator films through an augmented reality computer display.

The website 9to5Google claims to have seen a prototype of the Google goggles, which apparently resemble Oakley’s Thump sunglasses, featuring a built-in audio system.

The site reported in December that Google was developing glasses using a heads-up display (HUD) that could tap into Google’s cloud-based applications for information based on the user`s surroundings.

It claims that the goggles have a tiny front-facing camera with a flash that can gather information and take photos. They will also run a navigation system operated by the user tilting their head to scroll and click, it says.

The goggles will also have voice input and output, as well as the equivalent central processing unit, memory and storage of an Android smartphone.

The HUD would operate in just one eye to avoid disorientating wearers.

Despite the excitement surrounding their creation, it remains unclear whether the goggles will ever be produced commercially.

However, the project – understood to be in the hands of the company’s Google X laboratory – is in keeping with its other radical ideas, which included a patent for a self-driving car last year.

New looks of Nokia Lumia Coffee Tab

Mynokiablog has a nifty series of Nokia tablet concepts and phone renders as well, that has just brought us a fresh tablet design.

This is a Windows 8 concept slate, a ‘Coffee Tab’ as the designer calls it.

This model was created by Tristan, who speculated how the Windows 8 Nokia tablet would look like and he even included some Nokia Purity in-earphones.

This Lumia tablet’s specs include a 1.4GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM, 16/32/64 GB of internal memory and a 9.7 inch AMOLED Clearblack display with a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution.

There’s an 8 megapixel camera at the back, but it’s placed at the top left corner and not in the middle, so it won’t bother the user when he holds the slate in landscape with two hands.

At the front there’s a 2 megapixel camera and this device runs Windows 8 tablet edition, in case you’re wondering.

WiFi and 3G, plus GPS and Bluetooth are also on board.

This would make a fine tablet, if you ask me and with the proper marketing, like the Lumia series got, it could become a huge hit and eat up the market share of some minor Android tablets like the HTC Flyer and even the Motorola Xoom.

Galaxy S III coming soon

Samsung plans to unveil yet another Android-powered smartphone in its Galaxy S range in the lead-up to what industry insiders are hoping will be a big year for mobile developments at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in February.

Samsung is rumoured to be launching the successor to the popular Galaxy S II handset (the Galaxy S III) at MWC a dual or quad-core device with a 12 megapixel camera and a 4.5-inch or larger HD display.

The tablet is said to have a 11.6" display and a 2 GHz processor and to support the same stylus input as Samsung`s Galaxy Note.

While MWC rumors abound, the company is touting an entry-to-mid-range Android smartphone called the Samsung Galaxy S Advance. Additional rumors suggest that Samsung will instead unveil a larger Galaxy Tab.

Blogs are also suggesting that Nokia will take the wraps off its 12 megapixel Lumia 910 handset, Sony will unveil up to 10 new phones, and Huawei will show off the "smartest, fastest and most high-performing smartphone."

One in 10 Facebook users supports ‘timeline’

As part of a major overhaul of the site, all publicly viewable messages, comments and photographs will be grouped together by date.

The idea is to create an online scrap book telling the user’s virtual ‘life story’ – at least back to 2004 when the site was founded.

It means that, unless they are deleted, any long forgotten musings, embarrassing photographs or even messages of affection for a past lover will be easily accessible.

At present other users can only find material from several years ago by trawling through past pages.

Critics claim that the change could erode users’ privacy but Facebook insists that it will not make anything publicly available which is not already viewable.

A survey of 4,000 Facebook users by the security form Sophos found that only eight per cent of those polled said that they liked the change.

By contrast 51 per cent of those who took part said that they were ‘worried’ by the new format while another eight per cent said that they would ‘get used to it’.

Users are to be notified in the next few weeks and then will be given seven days to go through their profiles deleting anything they do not want to be visible on their timeline.

A spokeswoman for Facebook said, ‘Timeline does not change any of your existing privacy settings’.

There will be an ‘activity log’ which will allow people to apply an extra privacy settings to each post.

It would mean that people can decide whether all or just some of their friends can see a particular photograph.

The spokeswoman said, ‘It will show you all of your posts and activity - from today back to when you first started using Facebook.’

‘Only you can see your activity log. You can use it to easily review and choose who sees what you`ve shared on your Timeline.’

Paul Bradshaw, visiting professor of online journalism at City University London, being able to retrieve information posted on Facebook pages from a number of years ago may make people more aware of what they post.

‘I think it taps into a wider issue that people make assumptions when they use a social media website regarding who can see what they`re putting up there’, he said.

Google announces privacy changes across products

Google will soon know far more about who you are and what you do on the Web.

The Web giant announced that it plans to follow the activities of users across nearly all of its ubiquitous sites, including YouTube, Gmail and its leading search engine.

Google has already been collecting some of this information. But for the first time, it is combining data across its Web sites to stitch together a fuller portrait of users.

Consumers won’t be able to opt out of the changes, which take effect March 1. And experts say the policy shift will invite greater scrutiny from federal regulators of the company’s privacy and competitive practices.

The move will help Google better tailor its ads to people’s tastes. If someone watches an NBA clip online and lives in Washington, the firm could advertise Washington Wizards tickets in that person’s Gmail account.

Consumers could also benefit, the company said. When someone is searching for the word ‘jaguar’, Google would have a better idea of whether the person was interested in the animal or the car. Or the firm might suggest e-mailing contacts in New York when it learns you are planning a trip there.

But consumer advocates say the new policy might upset people who never expected their information would be shared across so many different Web sites.

A user signing up for Gmail, for instance, might never have imagined that the content of his or her messages could affect the experience on seemingly unrelated Web sites such as YouTube.

‘Google’s new privacy announcement is frustrating and a little frightening’, said Common Sense Media chief executive James Steyer.

‘Even if the company believes that tracking users across all platforms improves their services, consumers should still have the option to opt out — especially the kids and teens who are avid users of YouTube, Gmail and Google Search’.

Google can collect information about users when they activate an Android mobile phone, sign into their accounts online or enter search terms. It can also store cookies on people’s computers to see which Web sites they visit or use its popular maps program to estimate their location.

Obama at Intel

President Obama paid a visit to Intel`s Chandler, Ariz., chip plant today, praising the chipmaker for keeping high-tech manufacturing jobs in the U.S.

An America that makes more: "I`m here because the factory being built behind me is an example of an America that is within our reach. An America that attracts that next generation of good manufacturing jobs.

An America where we make stuff and sell stuff all over the world...We can`t go back to a economy weakened by outsourcing. And last night in the State of the Union, I laid out a vision of how we move forward. Laid out a blue print of an economy built to last. It`s an economy built on American manufacturing with more good jobs and more products made in America."

Incentives to create domestic jobs: "This [Intel] project is going to employ thousands of construction workers [and] when this project is finished, Intel will employ about a thousand men and woman making the computer chips that power everything from your smartphone to your laptop.

As an American, I`m proud of companies like Intel that create jobs here. We have a huge opportunity to create more high-tech manufacturing jobs in the United States and bring back some of these jobs from overseas but we`re going to have to seize the moment."

That doesn`t make sense. Let`s stop rewarding business that ship jobs overseas, let`s reward companies that are investing and creating jobs right here in the United States of America...What we should do is subsidize and give tax breaks to companies that are investing here.

High tech manufacturers like Intel. Today my administration is laying out several concrete actions we could take right now that would discourage companies from outsourcing jobs and encourage them to invest in the United States."

Obama continued. "That starts with changing our tax system. Right now, companies get all kinds of tax breaks when they move jobs and companies overseas but when a company chooses to stay in America, it gets hit with one of the highest tax rates in the world.

Facebook relieved at SOPA, PIPA delay

After US lawmakers stopped anti-piracy legislation in its tracks, Facebook expressed their relief in a post and thanked its users for their support and feedback.

Like Wikipedia and others, Facebook, however, didn’t go dark in protest against SOPA and PIPA, but it expressed its opposition to the anti-piracy bills.

But after lawmakers put the bills on hold (until there is wider agreement on a solution), Facebook expressed their relief on the Faceboook Washington DC page.

The post made by the company reads, ‘We are relieved that Congress has recognised the serious damage the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) could cause to the Internet and are pleased that congressional leaders have decided not to move forward on these bills.’

‘We want to thank the millions of Facebook users who shared their views with us, with members of Congress, and with their friends and families on this important issue, and who changed the direction of this harmful legislation.’

‘We appreciate that lawmakers have listened to our community’s concerns, and we stand ready to work with them on solutions to piracy and copyright infringement that will not chill free expression or threaten the economic growth and innovation the Internet provides.’

‘You can read more about Facebook’s view on this legislation by clicking the ‘Anti-Piracy Bills’ tab on the left side of the Facebook Washington DC page.’

Also, readers can read more about Facebook’s opinion on the bills by clicking the ‘Anti-piracy Bills’ tab on the left side of the Facebook Washington DC page.

BTRC issues 6 ITC licenses

Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has issued six licenses for setting up international terrestrial cables (ITC) connecting the country with the world information super highway.

A circular from BTRC circulated on March 31 last year disclosed that three ITC licenses would be issued whether now the number has been increased to six.

The license awarded companies are Fibre at Home, Mango Teleservices, Summit Communication, One Asia-AHL JV, BD Link Communication and Novocom.

The BTRC source said six ITC licenses have been issued for the availability of internet for the first time.

BTRC chairman handed over the licenses Thursday to the six companies and asked them to start operation within six months.

Earlier, BTRC formed a committee comprising twenty members who were responsible for making a list of the eligible applicants according to standard.

Nine companies applied for the license.

The terrestrial cables, passing through Meherpur, Benapol, Sylhet and Comilla borders, will provide a route alternative to the subsea connectivity.

Currently, the country is linked to the world through lone submarine cable SEA-ME-WE 4, without any backup facility.
