BTRC issues 6 ITC licenses

Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has issued six licenses for setting up international terrestrial cables (ITC) connecting the country with the world information super highway.

A circular from BTRC circulated on March 31 last year disclosed that three ITC licenses would be issued whether now the number has been increased to six.

The license awarded companies are Fibre at Home, Mango Teleservices, Summit Communication, One Asia-AHL JV, BD Link Communication and Novocom.

The BTRC source said six ITC licenses have been issued for the availability of internet for the first time.

BTRC chairman handed over the licenses Thursday to the six companies and asked them to start operation within six months.

Earlier, BTRC formed a committee comprising twenty members who were responsible for making a list of the eligible applicants according to standard.

Nine companies applied for the license.

The terrestrial cables, passing through Meherpur, Benapol, Sylhet and Comilla borders, will provide a route alternative to the subsea connectivity.

Currently, the country is linked to the world through lone submarine cable SEA-ME-WE 4, without any backup facility.
